Yokai Watch 2 Competitive Scene: "I'm here for the cute stuff"

Just a few days ago I was on the Mt. Wildwood discord server and it turns out they're having their first weekly tournament. I entered and started building a team with the new additions from the big Oni 2.0 update.

Its this cool idea where I use stronger version (or S rank versions) of the mascot yokai that can bash the enemy with "Soultimate" moves (a yokais strongest move) that do damage to all yokai out on the front line.

I really like Yokai Watch in general for its goofy lighthearted approach to spooky spirit creature capture and battling definitely has its potential. Since you can't directly tell yokai what to do during battle there's a lot of focus on team building and basing your team around a balanced idea, that actually ends up leading to some pretty aesthetically pleasing wheels (symmetry), and some entertaining strats. The other cool thing, that’s not really an in game thing is the obscurity of team building because of how new the games are. Even though its two games into the franchise it doesn't have much of a following in the U.S. so right now the game is in its infancy. There is already a standard, like having two tanks, but its not concrete and you can still make some really interesting teams because of that obscurity, like this player named Fantem who made a team based around draining health with his whole front line, while his back-line mitigates damage attribute and blocks.

It's always cool to watch people figure out a game and be able to take part yourself.

I think generally speaking the "skill roof" for the game is low and there's mechanics like "sudden death" that definitely make the game feel casual. I'm sure we'll hit the ceiling soon so to speak (if we haven't already) because there are already things that can simply overpower most teams, but the game is so colorful and so damn fun I really can't help but enjoy myself spending time building teams.
